How we Support EAL at Unique Academy

We want to ensure that our provision matches the learning and development needs of all of our children. As we have a large amount of children in our setting whom English is not the dominant language at home, we ensure our setting is equitable and inclusive for all our children.

We record details of the languages children speak at home.
We work with parents as partners.
Our staff are bilingual and use this to their advantage wherever possible, in order to raise language awareness and raise self-esteem.
We use two-way communication of information via teachers who speak the common language.
We welcome all families and children without prejudice.
Staff are trained on how to support children with EAL.

Learn English at home (LEAH)

LEAH supports adults in learning English, particularly those who may face barriers to accessing traditional adult education classes. Their lessons are designed to help individuals communicate their basic and everyday needs in English. This service is especially suitable for those who:

Have additional social needs, such as being impacted by domestic violence or modern slavery.
Have caring responsibilities for young children or older adults.
Have physical or mental health challenges.
