age limits on apps and games

At school, we do everything we can to keep children safe online. Through our curriculum, we teach digital safety and help pupils build digital resilience. However, this is a joint effort, and your support at home is essential. Thank you for working with us to reinforce these messages and help keep children safe.

Children need to be protected from inappropriate online content and have a healthy balance between screen time and other activities. While the digital world brings many benefits, especially highlighted during recent lockdowns, it’s also important to be aware of its risks and ensure children use technology safely and appropriately.

what you can do at home

  • Set time limits for screen time and stick to a consistent routine.
  • Keep devices in shared spaces so children are supervised during screen time.
  • Regularly monitor the content your child accesses online.
  • Apply parental controls and safety settings on:
    • Phones, tablets, laptops, and PCs
    • Streaming platforms (e.g. Netflix, YouTube)
    • Gaming consoles (e.g. Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo)

age limits on social media

It’s important to follow the official age requirements for apps, as these help protect young users from harmful content and interactions. Providing a false age may remove certain safety features designed to protect minors.

Social media platforms are not just about sharing photos—they can expose children to adult content, harmful interactions, and privacy risks.

age ratings on games

Games that seem child-friendly can contain inappropriate themes (e.g. violence, bad language, substance use). These can influence behaviour and wellbeing and some games have addictive qualities.

Many games also allow online interaction. Without proper settings, children can be exposed to inappropriate messages or online bullying, even from other children.
